The general tour of the grounds is approximately 45 minutes in length with 15 minutes of Q&A and “travel” time built included for a total of approximately 60 minutes in length. We cover the story of each of the buildings and talk about the general history of Berrien County as represented by these structures. No additional topics will be discussed on the tour.
While the tour is approximately an hour in length, all groups/schools are recommended to schedule approximately two hours for their tours. In addition to the tour itself, this extra time covers arrival and/or disembarking, bathroom stops (pre-and post-tour), time for attendees to visit the grounds, and for shopping in the gift shop.
If your group is not interested in a guided tour but would rather tour the grounds at their leisure, you are welcomed to do so! There is no fee for unguided groups, but we ask that you notify the BCHA ahead of time so staff can prepare to meet the needs of a large group.
Information for All Tour Styles
Fees are based on the number of guests in your group and the BCHA maxes all group tours at 100 people. However, the BCHA reserves the right to reduce this number based on local health department regulations during COVID-19. Additionally, guests will be required to follow any and all COVID-19 protocols set by the BCHA and no exceptions will be allowed.

Guests will enjoy a tour of the grounds followed by a 45 minute talk inside the 1839 Courthouse’s gorgeous courtroom. We cover the story of each of the buildings and talk about the general history of Berrien County as represented by these structures during the tour. The talk will include a power point presentation and may be enhanced with artifacts from the BCHA’s collections.
Group leaders/teachers are recommended to schedule three hours for this option – the tour, the talk, and arrival and/or disembarking, bathroom stops (pre-and post-tour), time for attendees to visit the grounds, and for shopping in the gift shop. Please note that because we are hosting the talks in the Courtroom, those with mobility issues may have a hard time accessing this space. Accommodations may be available and you are encouraged to reach out to us about alternative arrangements.
NOTE: The BCHA is currently reviewing the talks and subjects we are making available for this option. This list will change and we encourage group leaders/ teachers to touch base with us to see if their desired talk may still be available at the time of their tour.

Guests will enjoy a 45 minute tour of the History Center at Courthouse Square before engaging in a history-inspired activity. All materials needed to complete the activity are provided.
As with our tour with a talk option, the BCHA recommends that group leaders/ teachers schedule three to three and a half hours for this option. Most of the activities can be completed within an hour time frame, but larger groups may take longer to finish the activity. All of these activities have been chosen for their ease and are perfect for groups as young as older elementary school. Pre-school and younger elementary students may complete some of the activities but will need adult help and groups will need to take that into consideration.
Some activities are seasonal in nature and accommodations may not be available. Group leaders/ teachers are encouraged to reach out to us regarding attendees who may need any level of accommodation during their tour and activity. Those interested in blacksmithing must make arrangements no earlier than two months prior to their trip date in order to arranged for our teachers to prepare for the group’s needs.
Because of the nature of this option, the max amount of guests per tour/ school group is 50 people/students.
NOTE: The BCHA is currently review the activities we are making available for this option. This list will likely change and we encourage group leaders/ teachers to touch base with us to see if their desired activity may be available at the time of their tour.
